<p>Polypeptid로 secondary structure가 구성되고 이것이 계속해서 꼬이게 되면 더 안정한 molecules가 될 것이다. 이러한 꼬여있는 형태의 단일의 삼차 구조 모양의<br />형태를 protein의 tertiary structure라고 한다.<br />&nbsp; secondary structure와 같이, tertiary structure는 primary structure에 의해서 최종적으로 결정이 된다.&nbsp;<br />그러나, tertiary structure는 molecule의 secondary structure에 의해서 범위가 결정된다. 왜냐하면, polypeptide의 각각의 amino acid의 side chain의 위치에 따라서<br />특이성이 결정되기 때문이다. 만약 hydrogen bonds, covalent bonds, hydrphobic interactions, 또는 다른 atomic interactions로 구성되어질 수 있다면,&nbsp;<br />polypeptide는 그들 스스로 folding 할 수 있을 것이다.<br />polypeptide ultimately forms의 tertiary folding은 molecule의 grooves또는 노출된 부위에 다른 중요한 molecule들이 binding 하면서 이루어진다(예를 들어, 효소의 substrate의 binding, 또는 특이한 조절인자를 가진 protein이 DNA에 binding 하는 것 등)<br />게다가,&nbsp;polypeptide의 fold는 서로 근접한 cysteine residues의 sulfhydryl groups끼리의 결합에 의해서도 이루어진다.<br />이 자유스러운 -SH groups는 두 개의 amino acid 사이의 disulfide bond라는 형태의 covalent bond로 구성되어 있다.<br />만약 이 두 cysteine residues가 서로 다른 protein의 polypeptides에 위치하고 있다면, 이 disulfide bond는 두 개의 molecules로 생리학적 연결을 할 것이다.<br />게다가, 만약 disulfide bond가 molecule 내에서 구성되어질 수 있다면, single polypeptide는 자발적으로 folding될 수 있고, 그들 스스로 결합을 이룰 수 있다.<br />만약 protein이 두 개 또는 그 이상의 polypeptides로 구성되어 있다면, 이것은 또 다시 quaternary structure를 구성할 수 있다.&nbsp;<br />quaternary structure를 구성하는 protein에서, 각각의 polypeptide를 subunit이라고 부르고 이것은 primary, secondary, tertiary structure로 구성되어진다.<br />어떤 protein은 single subunit의 여러개의 복사체로 구성되어지기도 하고, 어떤 protein은 서로 다른 형태의 subunit으로 구성되어지기도 하는데,<br />전자를 homodimer라고 부르고, 후자를 heterodimer라고 부른다. 이 multisubunit proteins의 subunit은 noncovalent interactions에 의해서 서로를 붙잡고 있거나(hydrogen bond, van der waals forces, hydrophobic interactions) covalent linkages로 구성되는 경우도 있고, 부분적으로 intersubunit에서는 disulfide bonds로 구성되기도 한다.</p>
