전산생물학
컴퓨터를 이용하는 생물학이라는 뜻으로 전산생물학 (computational biology)이라는 용어가 사용되어 왔지만, 이 용어는 주로 복잡한 계산이 필요한 생명과학 분야에서 제한적으로 사용되어 왔다. 예를들면 단백질의 구조를 컴퓨터로 연구하는 전산구조생물학 (computational structural biology) 분야가 이에 포함된다.
그 러나 최근(1995년)들어 분자유전학, 분자생물학, 유전공학의 급격한 발전과 유전체사업의 결과로 방대한 생명정보가 축적되자 컴퓨터를 이용하여 체계적인 데이터베이스를 구축하고 이를 효율적으로 분석, 이용하려는 노력이 증대되어 왔다. 그리고 정보화 시대를 맞이하여 정보학이라는 용어가 각광을 받게 되자 최근에 생정보학, 생명정보학, 생물정보학이라는 용어가 새로 등장함.
