미국 NCBI의 한국어 번역 이름.
DirectorThe National Center for Biotechnology Information(NCBI) was established by Public Law 100-607 in Novem-ber, 1988, as a division of the National Library of Medicine.
The establishment of the NCBI reflects the importance ofinformation science and computer technology in the under-standing of the molecular processes that control health anddisease.
The Center has been given the responsibility to:
• Create automated systems for storing and analyzingknowledge about molecular biology, biochemistry, andgenetics;
• Perform research into advanced methods of computer-based information processing for analyzing the structureand function of biologically important molecules andcompounds;
• Facilitate the use of databases and software by biotech-nology researchers and medical care personnel; and,
• Coordinate efforts to gather biotechnology informationworldwide.
November 4, 1988--The Health Research Extension Act of 1988 (P.L. 100-607) was signed into law. The 2-year extension reaffirmed the special authorities of NCI and added information dissemination mandates, as well as a requirement to assess the incorporation of cancer treatments into clinical practice and the extent to which cancer patients receive such treatments. A representative from the Department of Energy was added to the National Cancer Advisory Board as an ex officio member.
