polysaccharides는 monosaccharide라고 불리는 수백에서 수천개의 monomeric carbohydrates로 구성 되어있다.<br />이들은 covalent bond로 구성이 되어있고 glycosidic bond라고 명명한다.<br />만약 두 monosaccharides가 glycosidic linkage에 의해서 결합한다면 이것을 disaccharide라고 하고,<br />하나의 monosaccharide가 더 붙으면 이것을 trisaccharide라고 하며, 계속해서 monosaccharide 가 붙으면<br />그것을 oligosaccharide, 굉장히 길 경우 polysaccharides라고 한다.<br />glycosidic bond에는 두 가지 형태가 있는데 glucose로 구성된 &alpha;, &beta; form 두 가지가 있다.<br />(추후 그림 첨부)<br />&alpha; form은 에너지를 저장하는 기능적으로 중요한 역할을 하는데 이러한 구성으로 에너지를 저장하는 생명체에는 박테리아, 식물, 동물 등이 있다.<br />cellulose는 &beta;-1,4 linkage로 구성되어 있는데 이것은 분해하기가 힘들고, 단단한 결합이다. 그래서 식물의 줄기나, argal cell wall의 구성 요소로 사용된다.<br />결론적으로, starch와 cellulose는 glucose의 연결로 만들어진 구성물질이고, &alpha;,&beta; form 여부에 따라서 형태가 달라질 수 있다.<br />polysaccharides는 다른 classes의 macromolecules와 combines하여 protein이나 lipid같은 polysaccharides complex를 형성한다. 이러한 complex를&nbsp;<br />glycoprotein과 glycolipid라고 한다. 이 두 가지 compound는 세포에서 중요한 기능을 하는데, cytoplasmic membrane에서 세포 표면의 receptor molecules<br />역할을 한다. 또한, Gram negative bacteria cell wall의 주오 portion이기도 하다.
